A motor yacht at anchor on the French Riviera

BUYER’S GUIDE · FINANCE & OWNERSHIP

Yacht Finance & Ownership

Look beyond the purchase. Plan the life that follows.

The right yacht. A sustainable plan.

Plan the purchase and the running costs together. Independent specialists should advise on funding, tax, registration and legal decisions that depend on your circumstances.

01

Budget for the whole journey.

Alongside the purchase, allow for surveys, legal work, registration and applicable taxes. Build a separate annual budget for a berth, insurance, servicing, fuel, crew where needed and a repair reserve. Obtain yacht-specific estimates.

02

Compare the full funding terms.

If finance is part of your plan, ask a qualified lender or adviser about eligibility, deposit, term, currency, security, valuation and early repayment. Compare total costs, not just headline rates. Funding is subject to individual circumstances and the yacht.

03

Verify title, registration and tax status.

Ask independent maritime legal and tax advisers to review ownership structure, outstanding encumbrances and VAT or import documentation before signing. Registration alone does not establish tax status. Your residency, cruising area and intended use matter.

04

Prepare for the first season.

Confirm insurance cover, cruising limits and skipper requirements. Plan maintenance, safety equipment and operational support. If charter is a future ambition, obtain advice on commercial compliance and costs; income is not guaranteed.

BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Your conversation
checklist.

  • What are my purchase and separate annual operating budgets?
  • Which funding conditions and total costs apply to me?
  • What evidence confirms title, tax status and outstanding finance?
  • Who will advise on legal, tax and registration matters?
  • Who will arrange insurance, servicing and daily operation?
